Containers are a great way to add color to spots where a traditional planting bed isn't possible. Containers can create a welcome greeting on a porch, add interest to a deck, and brighten window ledges. And creating stunning containers could not be easier.

The first step in container success is knowing how much light your container will recieve. This will make a difference in what plants you can choose. It also is helpful to make sure that the area is easily accessable for watering, as some conatiners will need watering everyday, and at least every other day.

The next step is finding a container that will look great in the spot, as well as being big enough to hold the flowers. If you can find self watering conatiners that you like the style of, investing in them will save you a lot of time, and help ensure that your plants get the water they need.

After getting your pot and soil, the next step is too choose flowers. A basic contanier recipe is to find plants in three heights. First, something tall that will stand out. Plants like spiked palms, pampas grass, and even snapdragons, are great for containers. Second, filler flowers that will spread around the base of the tall plant. Plants like vinca, petunia, and impatients work well. And lastly, flowers that trail, which will cascade over the side of the container. Looks for trailing leaves, even some variety of petunias, and anything that you see in a hanging basket at the nursery.

Choosing a color palate is also key to a stunning container. Monochromatic schemes with varied textures work well, while triatic schemes also create a lot of interest. Choosing one flower type in varied colors can also be a great way to create a stunning container. Have fun, and enjoy it all summer long!
