With the newest Harry Potter movie set to release on July 17th, 2009, now is a perfect time to set aside a spot in your yard to create a theme garden. Our yard has a Harry Potter inspired garden, complete with Hagrid’s cottage!

All right, so we don’t have an exact replica of Hagrid’s cottage, but creativity and finding good substitutes is key in creating a theme garden that will work in our climate. Here are a few examples of plants to get you started!

Let’s start with something growing in Hagrid’s garden, pumpkins! In the movie he grows huge orange pumpkins, but if you are short on space you could try growing miniature pumpkins, or even one of our favorites, Lumina pumpkins which are white on the outside and orange on the inside. They will help make your Halloween magical as well.

Hellebores, which come in a lot of great colors and grow well in our climate, are featured in the Harry Potter series in making potions. I find them magical because they actually bloom in the late winter, which is a welcome and magical site after the long winters we have! A great example is the Kingston cardinal.

Other magical plants featured in the world of Harry Potter aren’t real, but can be substituted with actual plants with a little creativity. For example, you could use a flowering cabbage to represent Mandrakes, and balloon flowers in place of puffapods.

As for structures, we found a small solar cottage online that looked a lot like Hagrid’s cottage. I also tried to use varied heights of dirt, and plan to add a small pond to represent the lake in front of Hogwarts. What you come up with will depend a lot on the area you have available for your fantasy garden, the sun and shade of the spot as for what plants you can choose, but hopefully this will get your creative juices flowing.
