Perennials are a great way to add color and variety to the garden, and they are a great way to save money too! The initial investment when planning a perennial garden will be a bit higher than buying annuals, but since you only have to make that purchase once, they are a great way to save money in the long run.
Perennials come in a variety of colors and styles in our growing region. Some of my favorites can even be easily divided (which is great if you have more garden than money). Sharing perennials with friends and neighbors is another great way to make your gardening dollar go far.
Some great perennials for sun include lavender, daisies, coneflower, phlox, geraniums, and hibiscus. If you have a shaded area Hosta, hydrangeas, and Hellebores are all interesting and hardy in our area.
The best place to start is to visit a local nursery. A good nursery will carry perennials for our zone, and they will be able to answer any questions you have. They can also give you great tips to give your perennials the right start. Be aware that nurseries in shops like Lowe’s and Home Depot often carry plants that are not cold hardy for our region, and they are often mixed in with plants that are.
Buying your perennials at the end of the season is also a great way to save money. Often they will be sold at a deep discount right before a store is getting ready to close their garden center for the year. Usually the best deals can be found near the end of August and September. Nurseries usually don’t discount their perennials much since they operate year round, so be sure to visit hardware, or other types of store in this case.
With a good plan, and great plants, it’s possible to have a great looking garden year after year without spending much money.
