Fall is apple season! Who doesn't love apples? To me, they are the perfect food. They're easy to eat, portable, delicious and good for you.
Studies show that apples may protect against heart disease, help regulate blood sugar, reduce the risk of some cancers and many chronic diseases, and improve memory and brain function. And they're a low-cal snack. One medium apple has around 75-80 calories and 3 grams of fiber.
I eat apples at least every other day. I love to eat them with peanut butter, drizzled with honey, or sliced thin in a salad. My favorite variety is Pink Lady. Sweet and tart, juicy and full of flavor, this apple tastes like Champagne. Yum!!
Want to stock your fridge with apples AND get a workout? Go pick your own. Area farms have an abundance of apples right now. One place I enjoy is Larriland Farm. This past summer, I went there to stock up on blueberries, sour cherries and raspberries. Before the season's over, I'll be back for Fujis, Suncrisps and Pink Ladies. Larriland Farm is open through Nov. 2. They suggest that you call the day you plan to come to find out what is available that day.

If you can't get to a farm or prefer to buy your apples from a grocery store, head over to Wegmans in Hunt Valley and peruse their large apple selection. This is where I first discovered the delightful Pink Lady.
