There are many reasons to admire the TV costume designers whose work is on display at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandizing through this weekend. First, they simply design beautiful clothes. Visitors can get close enough to the exhibits to see every stitch and every sequin—and to wish they had a designer for their own wardrobes.

Where the featured designers’ talent truly shines through is in their handling of the particular needs of each television show, whether it’s specific historical periods, a particular culture, or even special effects. Looking at their creations, it’s easy to believe these designers can pull off anything.

Platforms show costumes from these television series or made-for-TV movies:

• The Tudors (Photo: FIDM)
• John Adams
• Coco Chanel
• Gossip Girl
• Dancing with the Stars
• Castle
• The L Word
• Grey Gardens
• The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency
• United States of Tara
• Without a Trace
• Project Runway
• Sense & Sensibility
• Ghost Whisperer

Whether you’re a fashion expert, a home sewer, or just crazy about a particular television show, you’ll enjoy FIDM’s Television Costume Design Exhibition, located at 919 S. Grand Avenue in Los Angeles. The exhibition, which is free of charge, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Sunday, September 6.
