The Michael Jackson media circus is now officially in overdrive following the sudden, tragic death of the self-proclaimed King of Pop on June 25 in Los Angeles.
Numerous press outlets are reporting that Jackson, who died at age 50 after going into cardiac arrest, may have been given an accidental overdose of Demerol (a narcotic painkiller similar to morphine) shortly before his death.
A Jackson family member told TMZ that Michael had routinely received a daily injection of Demerol, and that yesterday he had been given a shot at 11:30 a.m. Pacific time. Jackson died three hours later, at 2:26 p.m. Pacific time. Family members said the dosage was "too much" and that's what caused his death.
While the exact cause of Michael's death has yet to be officially confirmed (Jackson is undergoing an autopsy today), it was widely known that Michael was badly burned during the filming of a Pepsi commercial in 1984, and became addicted to prescription painkillers afterward.
The addiction escalated so much that Jackson eventually entered a drug rehabiliation facility. Tellingly, during Jackson's 2005 child molestation trial, police reportedly found syringes and drugs, including Demerol, at his home (on the other hand, who wouldn't need drugs to get through such a public spectable?).
According to The Sun, an emergency room source at UCLA Medical Center said Jackson family members told medics that Michael had collapsed after an injection of Demerol. “Shortly after taking the Demerol, he started to experience slow shallow breathing," said the source. “His breathing gradually got slower and slower until it stopped. "
Meanwhile, others have remarked how shockingly frail and thin Michael was in his last days. "He is a skeleton," said one fan who met Jackson recently. Similarly, filmmaker Bryan Michael Stoller, who had visited Jackson in April, was stunned by his extreme weight loss. "I hugged him and it was like hugging bones," Stoller has said.
The L.A. County Coroner conducted an autopsy on Michael Jackson June 26. [UPDATE: Check out the autopsy results here]
