Twilight star Taylor Lautner took a break from filming June 21 when he appeared at the 2009 MuchMusic Video Awards (a Canadian awards show) in Toronto.
Lautner, 17, has been in Vancouver since March, shooting New Moon, the sequel to Twilight, the hit vampire romance co-starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. While the super-hunky Pattinson, 23, was the clear breakout star of Twilight, Taylor is poised to shine in New Moon.
Lautner's Jacob Black character plays a significant role in New Moon, vying for protagonist Bella Swan's affections against rival Edward Cullen (Rob's character). In the film, Jacob undergoes a dramatic transformation, from a boyish teenager to hulking shape-shifter.
To look the part of the super-muscular Jacob, Lautner underwent a rigorous workout regimen which resulted in his gaining almost 30 lbs. of muscle in three months.
"I started working out the day after I finished filming Twilight because I knew it was a necessity for the character," he said. In addition to daily workouts, Lautner also ate “as much as possible" and drank lots of protein shakes.
Taylor, who is a martial-arts expert, has experience with physically demanding action roles. At age 12, he was a junior world karate champion. And in 2005, Taylor co-starred in the family film, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, as well as the comedy, Cheaper by the Dozen 2.
Judging from recent movie stills from New Moon, Lautner's intense fitness regimen has payed off. His co-star Kristen Stewart, 19, has gushed about the actor's dedication. "Taylor's an entirely different person physically," she said. "It took him so much time."

Meanwhile, Lautner confesses that filming New Moon in Vancouver has had its share of challenges. “I was shirtless; all I was wearing was shorts,” he reveals. “We were in 35-degree weather. [They] poured rain on [us], which is like ice cold! I’m just standing there basically naked, with everybody like bundled up in this ice cold weather!”
But all the hard work will be worth it, Taylor promises. "There is heart break [in New Moon] and it’s horrible," he recently told Access Hollywood. "New Moon will rip your heart to shreds. So get ready!”
New Moon opens in November.
