Former Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa is fueling speculation that he bleached his skin after being photographed recently in Las Vegas looking several shades lighter than usual.
Compounding Sammy's drastically altered appearance are the green contacts he's sporting in the above AP Photo. Experts speculate that Sosa either bleached his skin or is suffering from the skin condition vitiligo. But Sammy's friend says his lightened complexion is merely due to cosmetic skin resurfacing.
"He's not trying to be Michael Jackson," says former Cubs employee and Sosa friend Rebecca Polihronis. "He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin. Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white."
According to Polihronis, Sosa--who turns 41 on Nov. 12--has always been self-conscious about his appearance. "He has always been concerned with the way he looks," she tells the Chicago Tribune. "He was doing a dermatological skin process after years and years [of playing baseball] in the sun."
She adds: "The picture is deceiving. [Sammy] said, 'If you saw me in person, you would be surprised. It doesn't look like the picture."
Sosa, who was born in the Dominican Republic, retired from baseball in 2007. During his 18-year career, rumors swirled that Sammy had used anabolic steroids. In June 2009, The New York Times reported that Sammy had tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003.
