Disney teen sensation Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers band, visited Washington, D.C., on June 24 to testify at a Senate hearing for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Nick, who was diagnosed with diabetes in 2005, urged the Senate committee to continue funding diabetes research until a cure is found. "My life depends on it," said Jonas, 16. "All our lives depend on it."
Not surprisingly, throngs of adoring female fans crowded into the room to catch a glimpse of the curly-haired teen heartthrob. Nick, who is currently on tour with his brothers, recently discussed how he keeps his diabetes under control.
"When I wake up, the first thing I do is check my blood sugar," says Nick. "Then I usually eat breakfast, typically an omelet because it has eggs, which are good, and other things that help me stay stable. Throughout the day, I check my blood sugar regularly, probably 9 to 10 times a day."
Nick also makes sure he eats right and gets enough rest. In addition to limiting his sugar intake, Jonas also avoids soda. During his high-energy concerts, Nick is careful to avoid overexerting himself. "Generally, we play for about an hour and 45 minutes, which is like intense exercise," he says. "If my blood sugar drops, I leave the stage to treat it with orange juice or, if it's very low, regular soda."
Separately, rumors are swirling that Nick has reunited with his ex-girlfriend, 16-year-old Hannah Montana star, Miley Cyrus. While neither Cyrus nor Nick have confirmed they're dating again, Nick's brother, Joe Jonas, 19, recently hinted that Nick and Miley had gotten back together.
When Joe told CNN talk show host Larry King that he has a girlfriend, Larry asked if she was as famous as Nick's galpal, to which Joe replied: "I don't think anybody's as famous as Miley Cyrus." Oops!
Nick, who dated Cyrus from 2005 to 2007, recently said he and Miley had gotten back in touch. "It's nice to have reconnected with her," said Nick. "For a little while there, we had not been as reconnected as we are now." Miley, who recently split from model Justin Gaston, joined the Jonas Brothers at their concert in Austin, Texas, on June 20, where she performed their hit single Before The Storm with them.
