Padma Lakshmi, the stunning co-host of the hit Bravo reality show Top Chef, spends much of the show (now in its sixth season) sampling rich, exotic food. So how does the 38-year-old ex-model maintain her fabulous physique?
“Because I know I’ll be eating so many different foods during each episode, I try to limit what I eat off set,” says Lakshmi. “In addition, when a season of Top Chef ends, I go into a food detox. I eat very simple foods for a while.”
Portion control and a balanced diet play key roles in staying lean, says Padma. "I cut out as much fat and sugar as possible and eat only complex carbohydrates and lean protein. I try to eat as many fruits and veggies as I can, plus [drink] at least 2 to 3 liters of water."
Lakshmi also reveals she's a big proponent of eating breakfast, calling it the most important meal of the day. Padma finds shopping at green markets relaxing and is all for basic cooking. The better the chef, the simpler the cooking, she says.
Still, even supermodels face weight issues. "I do gain weight—about 12 to 15 pounds—in seven weeks of taping [Top Chef]," she says. Over the course of three seasons, my wardrobist and I have learned that we need to have 'skinny' clothes and 'fat' clothes."
Lakshmi, who in 2007 was named one of People magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People in the World, admits she exercises "a lot." To keep her 5'9" frame in tip-top condition, the gorgeous Indian-American actress works out up to 2 hours a day boxing, lifting weights, doing cardio and roller-skating.
The hard work is clearly paying off. Padma, who will turn 39 in September, looks fit and fabulous. Season 6 of Top Chef is currently filming in Las Vegas.
