Evangelicals ... scaring themselves.
Evangelicals ... scaring themselves.
Matthew Isaac/Dead Oceans

All evidence - besides their somewhat ill-concieved name, suggests that Evangelicals have very little to do with Christianity.

The four-piece dreamy rock ensemble from Norman, Oklahoma is playing the Hi-Dive Monday, Nov. 9 and will have the place twinkling with a theatrical light show and fervent cloud of instrumental wonders, most of which will pause for meaningful, catchy riffs and collapse into edgy keyboard sirens.

Compared to The Flaming Lips but sounding - depending on the tune - more like something between Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Animal Collective, the band's second album, The Evening Descends (Dead Oceans, 2008), shoves poppy, catchy guitar riffs under spooky samples from old horror flicks, melodic to wailing, high-pitch vocals and a parade of sparkly, laser gun keyboard effects.

Famous for getting energetic and even chaotic on stage amid their customized light show, you might not find yourself consulting the bible later, but you will probably be moved to some level of personal resurrection.

Florida's twangy and thoughtful Holiday Shores and Fort Collins' experimental, ethereal Candy Claws open at the Hi-Dive Monday. Get tickets here.
