One of the most creative bands on the planet of indie rock – named after the most pressing question in the universe – is playing the Bluebird this Friday.
Cincinnati-based WHY? is touring in support of its freshly launched fourth album, Eskimo Snow. WHY? front man Yoni Wolf says his songs are simply “feelings and ideas” that take the shape of songs because he couldn’t articulate them in any other way. The music pretty much says it all, but here are a few other answers Wolf had for those few questions out there that have answers …
If WHY? embodies life’s search for something unreachable, what types of things would you consider “of small significance?”
Yoni Wolf: Everything is both of small significance and big significance depending on your vantage point.
Who are your favorite musicians (what are you listening to), new and old?
YW: Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Outkast, MF DOOM…too many to name all.
How does WHY? fit in to the notion of Existentialism?
YW: I'm not sure if it does.
What would you say is the most significant mark WHY? has made on the universe (so far)?
YW: Somebody told me he met his future wife at a WHY? show…We are a pretty serious vehicle for carbon emission what with all the traveling and all…airplanes, vans, buses, Hummer limos, etc.
What was the process of writing and producing Eskimo Snow?
YW: It was written over the course of a couple of years. I made some demos. We got together in Minneapolis and recorded it. Mixed it and mastered it twice. Second time stuck.
