The Chase for the Sprint Cup: After 31 of 36 races with five Chase races remaining in season.
After Martinsville, depending on how the No. 48 team fares, the Sprint Cup could be a race by the top three or five.
From No. 1 to No. 4, it’s still a race to the big prize.
Math and Driver comments:
1. Jimmie Johnson: "I wouldn't care if we didn't lead until the last lap at Homestead if we get the big trophy. That's what it's all about."
2. Mark Martin: “All it takes is just a ten-race roll to win that thing and everyone that gets in is capable of doing that.”
3. Jeff Gordon: “It is risk versus reward. Let’s hope we get down to the final laps of this race or any race from here on out and we get to show just how hungry we are to win this championship.”
4. Tony Stewart: "All we can do is worry about ourselves right now. It really takes the pressure off. All we can do is go for broke now.”
For the No 5 and No. 6:: The math is not good, not impossible, but just about as likely as snow in Florida. Snow flurries occasionally in North Florida, rarely in Central Florida and almost never in South Florida.
5. Kurt Busch: About No. 48 car, “The depth that they have is deep. They have all the weapons. For the rest of us, it’s going to take luck.”
6. Juan Montoya: “You’ve just got to try to run good everywhere and if you don’t you try to rescue as many points as you can and move on.”
From No. 6 on back, it’s really next year already. It’s all about murderous math. The numbers are daunting when the deficit is larger than the potential. It’s called being mathematically eliminated and although mathematics has no emotions, people do.
7. Greg Biffle: “I don’t think it would be realistic for a guy from us on back could win it, just simply for the fact of doing the numbers. The facts are we’re gonna have to have some help. Something is gonna have to happen to them. So if you just look at it logistically, it just doesn’t make sense that anybody on back has an opportunity. I think I can get to third or fourth, if one of those guys has some trouble and we get going here pretty good.”
8. Ryan Newman: “We haven’t shined like we wanted to shine to this point, but it hasn’t been for a lack of effort to try to try to luster.”
9. Kasey Kahne: “I don’t think either of us can stop him at this point as far as points go. It’s definitely not over. Anything can happen the rest of the year. If it doesn’t, Jimmie is the guy to beat.”
10. Carl Edwards: Edwards spoke about South Beach where he took a promotional ride on a land-sea vehicle and performed his famous back-flip into Biscayne Bay off Miami near the Atlantic Ocean.
“If we were to win the championship, South Beach is where we would come,” Edwards said. “My crew guys would really like this.”
11. Denny Hamlin: "This year is the best we've been as far as on?track performance. For whatever reason we just can't keep it together."
12. Brian Vickers : “We wanted to go win a championship. We’re not going to say that it’s out of the realm of possibilities. It’s not very likely, but as far as I’m concerned, as long we’re mathematically in it, we’re in it.”
