Spike TV announced today that they would be broadcasting some of the more exciting bouts from last month’s UFC 100 this Saturday, August 15th. The rebroadcast will be occurring at the same time that Strikeforce will be running the Carano versus Cyborg card on Showtime.
If UFC president Dana White’s comments last week about “Strikefarce” were the timid smack talk leading into this programming bout, the Spike TV broadcast is the UFC’s first probing jab against Strikeforce.
UFC 100’s rerun seems, at first, to be a very weak attempt at counter programming Strikeforce, especially compared to the viciousness in which the UFC attacked former rival company, Affliction.
UFC 100 had well over a million pay per view buys. Even the undercard matches that were not broadcast in July have been available on several on demand stations, not to mention the dozens of illegal rebroadcasts the internet has to offer. Anyone who has more than a passing interest in MMA has already seen everything UFC 100 had to offer.
Compared to Carano versus Cyborg, which has been advertised for months and, in spite of the rotating bouts on the card, has several high profile fights on it, a rerun isn’t exactly the best effort to wrestle ratings away from Strikeforce.
However, as a litmus test of Strikeforce’s viewer strength, the Spike broadcast is perfect. If rerun fights of UFC 100 have a significant impact on the ratings of Strikeforce’s big coming out party, then the UFC has little to worry about. A few major shows at the same time as Strikeforce cards in the future should be enough to drive the California company right out of the game.
Should all eyes be glued on Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, the UFC will have to attempt a different strategy to maintain their alpha dog status among MMA promotions.
Strikeforce has, as yet, issued no statement about the UFC’s counter programming attempt. From a business standpoint, they’re not likely to mention it at all, save to brag should Carano versus Cyborg be a rousing success in the ratings.
