While the explosive fight between Billy Evangelista and Jorge Gurgel may have headlined tonight’s Strikeforce Challengers event in Fresno, California, it was young prospect Luke Rockhold that was the biggest winner of the night. Rockhold added UFC expatriate Jessie Taylor to his list of four rear naked choke submissions in a row.
Though the win might have came by the same method as Rockhold’s last three, Taylor is hardly just another notch on the submission wizard’s belt. Not only is Taylor by far the most well known fighter on Rockhold’s resume, but he put on by far the best showing of grappling ability among Luke’s victims.
Ever the wrestler at heart, Taylor immediately shot in on Rockhold and attempted to drag his opponent to the ground. The exchange that followed was a rare display of quick and dynamic grappling where Rockhold demonstrated a great sprawl in stopping the initial takedown and a fantastic scramble in a series of reversals that ended at Taylor’s back.
With his first round defeat of Taylor, Rockhold’s stock has soared in the Strikeforce middleweight division. Though still well behind Tim Kennedy and other established middleweights in the promotion, Rockhold may be only one fight away from serious title contention.
