In an explosive finish to a fight that was promoted based on misleading google searches, Kerry Vera took home a devastating first round technical knockout against Kim “Sugar Free” Couture at tonight’s Strikeforce: Challengers series. Though the headlining bout saw a new star born under the Strikeforce banner in the form of explosive welterweight Tyron Woodley, it was the wives of the two UFC headliners that were the biggest draw for the general public.
In keeping with Strikeforce’s women’s division matchmaking policies, this week’s Couture versus Vera was far more fast paced than last week’s Couture versus Vera. However, the evenly matched talent was palpably absent this time around.
Though Sugar Free was unafraid to mix it up right from the start, she was clearly outclassed by the lady Vera. Couture had a few solid punches in each exchange, but couldn’t put a combination together against the quicker and stronger Vera. Couture’s takedown attempts came only as a form of acquiescence to losing striking exchanges and were easily stuffed when they came.
While Strikeforce has built the popularity of its women’s division around 145 pound stars like Gina Carano and Cris “Cyborg” Santos, a majority of the promotion’s female talent measures at 135 pounds. Kerry Vera’s impetuous style of fighting and pre-packaged name recognition may be what the lighter weight classes need to get more attention from the general public.
