Bayfront Park Amphitheater in downtown Miami reopens on Tuesday, August 18, 2009, after a multi-million-dollar renovation.

The opening event is a concert by Counting Crows. The show also includes Michael Franti & Spearhead and Augustana.

This will be the first concert at Bayfront Park  Amphitheater since the City of Miami and the Bayfront Park Management Trust, which oversees the park, signed an agreement with Live Nation, the world’s largest producer of live concerts, to operate, manage and exclusively book the amphitheater.

Live Nation has renovated the amphitheater and says it is now totally functional for touring concerts and other productions. The changes include replacing the benches with permanent reserved seats, a new roof structure, state-of-the-art production facilities, VIP boxes with table service and VIP parking, permanent new restroom facilities, and expanded concessions. It will have a capacity of 6,500 people.

Bayfront Park, in which the amphitheater is located, serves as downtown Miami’s front lawn. The 32-acre tract lies between Biscayne Boulevard and Biscayne Bay. It is best known as the site where, on February 15, 1933, Italian immigrant Giuseppe Zangara tried to assassinate President-elect Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Zangara missed, fatally wounding Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak instead.

Warren Henry Manning created Bayfront Park’s original design. Construction began in 1924, and the park opened in 1925. In the 1980s, it was redesigned by Japanese-America artist and landscape architect Isamu Noguchi, who replaced a previous bandshell in the park with the present amphitheater.

The August 18 concert starts at 7 PM. For advance ticket information, visit Live Nation   or call 877-598-8698. For VIP ticket information, e-mail: Miami.VIP@Livenation.com.
