Under the auspices of Seraphic Fire, Miami’s professional vocal ensemble, the early-music ensemble Tableau Baroque will perform Handel’s Inheritance July 23-26, 2009.
This musical journey through the formative years of the Baroque master George Frederic Handel (1685-1759) roams through 17th century Europe’s courts and chapels to illuminate the sources of Handel's genius.
The concert features music by composers whose music Handel knew and from whom he drew inspiration, including his first music teacher, Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow (1663-1712).
Others include Arcangelo Corelli (1653–1713), Reinhard Keiser (1674-1739), Johann Schelle (1648-1701), Johann Philipp Krieger (1649-1725), and Agostino Steffani (1653-1728).
Works by Handel himself also will be presented, illustrating how these influences came together to create his distinctive personal style.
The Performers
Tableau Baroque is an American chamber-music ensemble that brings early music to life through emotionally-connected and historically informed performances. Led by counter-tenor Ian Howell, its instrumentalists are musicians who play regularly with the Firebird Chamber Orchestra: Henry Lebedinsky (early keyboards), Michael Albert (baroque violin/countertenor), and Brian Howard (baroque cello).
Commenting on the program for this concert, Howell says:
“History tends to lift up the genius of timeless figures without much of a focus on their genesis.
“Handel's Inheritance walks you through his sonic world, from his childhood in Germany to his adolescent travels in Italy and to his triumphant arrival in England. Through the music of both Handel, his teachers, and his contemporaries, you will hear the unmistakable voice of the master emerge.
“I think that the real lesson is that like Handel, each of us has a story – a series of logical steps that brought us to where we are today. A program like this does not knock a genius like Handel off his pedestal, but it does show us the staircase in the back.”
