Construction will start in June of 2009 on the Sonesta Mikado Hotel Miami, a 252-key mixed-use hotel with oversized rooms and double suites, plus 119 luxury residences, and office and retail space. It is scheduled to open in 2011.

The developer, Tibor Hollo, 81, is chairman and president of Florida East Coast Realty.  The dean of south Florida developers, Hollo has built over 55 million square feet of landmark residential, commercial, industrial, and governmental properties and marinas since launching FECR in 1954. His achievements include development of the Omni/Venetia area, which is becoming one of South Florida's most important commercial and recreational centers.

The Sonesta Mikado will rise at 1701 NE 4th Ave., across from Margaret Pace Park and Biscayne Bay. Its location – in the Arts & Entertainment District north of downtown Miami – is near the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and the American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat basketball team.

The Design District, South Beach, the Brickell Financial Corridor, and Miami International Airport all are within a short drive.

Four-Diamond standard

The Sonesta Mikado Hotel Miami will be part of the upscale Sonesta Collection  of hotels, It will provide services and amenities meeting a four-diamond standard.

The 40-story property will have a full-service upscale restaurant; pool bar and grill; 14,000 square feet of flexible banquet and meeting space; 45,000 square feet of office space; a fitness center and destination spa; and a 12th-floor pool deck with views of downtown and the Port of Miami.

Zyscovich Architects has designed the project with a modern Asian theme and decor, based on the Japanese-themed opera The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan.
