Bluegrass will be the theme of this year’s annual gospel and folk presentation by Seraphic Fire, South Florida’s professional choral ensemble in concerts November 5th- 8th, 2009. Entitled “I’ll Fly Away”, these concerts will offer what Seraphic Fire describes as “a rousing take on American Bluegrass and the inspirational stories of the musicians who perform it.”
The choir will perform the concert’s title song, Alfred Brumley’s iconic church anthem “I’ll Fly Away,” and popular standards such as “It Is Well With My Soul,” “Deep River,” “Beulah Land,” and selections from the “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” movie soundtrack. Other songs will be announced from the stage.
Accompanying the singers will be the Seraphic Fire Bluegrass Band (Alvaro Bermudez, guitar; James Bass, bass; Josh Copeland, banjo), and the ensemble’s founding artistic director, Patrick Dupré Quigley, at the piano.
Homes and churches
“We grew up singing this music in our homes and in our churches,” Quigley says. “These tunes are as much a part of us as our voices are.
“For many of Seraphic Fire’s musicians, ‘I’ll Fly Away’ represents a nostalgic return to the music of their youth. Whether at home, in the church or on the stage, the undeniable influence of American Gospel and Bluegrass on just about every genre of American music is proven by the clapping hands and tapping feet of concert goers young and old.
“With ‘I’ll Fly Away,’ Seraphic Fire continues its commitment to the music of the American experience while providing audiences with an energetic and accessible experience that underscores the transformative power of music.”
