The Mexican Cultural Institute inMiami will hold a traditional Días de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration from 5 PM to 7 PM on Sunday, November 1.
The event will feature an exhibition of graphics by Mexican cartoonist and engraver José Guadalupe Posada, (1852-1913); sculptures by Eduardo Chirino, a contemporary Mexican artist who lives in Miami; a large display of offerings set out for the deceased; and refreshments including pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and hot chocolate. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead on November 1 is a time for families to gather at home and in cemeteries to welcome back the souls of departed family members and share a party with them.
The Day of the Dead began as an Aztec summer celebration. Spanish priests moved it to the autumn, bridging the gap between Hallowe’en on October 31 and All Souls Day on November 2 to create what amounts to a three-day holiday.
The Mexican Cultural Institute is at 5975 SW 72nd St (Sunset Drive), Suite 101, Miami FL 33143.
