In September, filming will begin for the up-coming movie “Lords of Chaos,” which is based upon the book Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind. The film, like the book, is centered around a series of murders and church arsons that took place in Norway in the early 1990s with the rise of the black metal scene.

If the comment sections of sites such as Roadrunner.com, metalunderground.com and the petition to stop the production of the movie are any indication, the black metal scene at large is displeased with the prospect of making a movie on the topic. The objections are twofold. The first being that the movie must necessarily compromise the content of the book, and thus the portrayal of the subject matter. As a result, detractors feel the film will only serve to bring more people with no understanding of black metal into the scene and compromise both the social and music aspects of black metal.

The second objection is that Varg Vikernes, who is the focal point of the book, is slated to be portrayed by Jackson Rathbone, who played Jasper in the first Twilight movie. The source of this seems to be disdain for Twilight, the actor, and the Twilight fan base. Black metal fans are concerned that, with Rathbone in the role of Vikernes, the movie will trigger an influx of alt-trend hopping teens and tweens to the film and scene, resulting in a “kvlt versus kvte” conflict.

Also displeased is Vikernes himself, recently released from prison for the murder Øystein Aarseth, of who wrote on his site that “The vast majority of all the statements made in this book are either misinterpretations; taken out of context; misunderstandings; malicious lies made by enemies; a result of ignorance; extreme exaggerations; and/or third-hand information at best. This includes the statements attributed to me!” Vikernes also claims “They have managed to fill the heads of a generation of metal fans with lies.”

Directed by Sion Sono, the movie is slated to be a teen film and a psychological horror movie, according to producer Stuart Pollok.
