Anyone who watches The Next Food Network Star, or who reads my articles, knows I am a huge Katie Cavuto Fan. After her stellar performance on the Rachael Ray Show, as well as showing her chops when it came to cooking for kids, America was stunned when she was eliminated by the judges this past Sunday night.
Katie, a 30 year-old native of Philly and a certified nutritionist and avid gardener, was kind enough to take some time and answer some questions about the Next Food Network Star, behind the scenes, and her future plans. Also, check out my slide show for some behind the scene action!
Lots of fans believe this to be your strongest week on the show. Were you surprised that you were eliminated?
I was 100% stunned. I thought I did extremely well in the mini-challenge. I thought it was important to be bright and animated for the children. I tried to make “yucko” food good, fun and exciting. Rachael Ray and Bobby Flay liked the presentation, so I really don't know what happened. I went into the elimination with my head held high—even thought I would win that week, but the only things they pointed out were the things I did wrong. Again, I was stunned and disheartened. All in all, the show a wonderful experience, and I would do the show again in a second.
What was your favorite challenge?
Of course my favorite challenge was the Rachael Ray on-camera challenge. I am very comfortable in front of the camera. Editing (Food Network) plays such a big part in the show. It seems as though they just showed my flaws last week. Food Network did not show my delivery in its entirety, so I am so glad people got to see the entire presentation on the Rachael Ray Show. You finally got to see the relaxed, confident, fun and spunky Katie! That felt great. Rachael was so positive and gave me nothing but positive feedback. It felt really good.
As far as the Food Network Stars go, you met many. Any favorites?
Well, besides Rachael, I was really impressed with Tyler Florence. He was very invested in the contestants and seemed passionate about helping. He served as a wonderful mentor and took the time to talk to us. Tyler was a great teacher, and I learned a lot from him.
Did you make any good friends among the other contestants?
They were all very talented, real people with awesome personalities. But I must say, Michael (Proietti) and I became really close. We were laughing and joking the whole time. You have to have that heir of laughter in a stressful situation in what can sometimes be a defeating atmosphere.
So you are working on a new cookbook. What is the focus?
Well, I just started. It will have a “farm to table” seasonal approach. I actually focus more on tasty foods that do not contain pesticides, hormones and the things that are really bad for you, as opposed to fat and calorie content. I enjoy a good burger and brownie just like the rest of us. You just need to know what to choose! I will let you know how it is going!
Organic foods can be pricey? Any tips on how to save money?
Farmer’s markets! Fruits, especially citrus, areusually fine even if they are not labeled organic--but you must remove the outer flesh, as the conventional picks may contain those dangerous pesticides. Also, keep in mind that it costs a great deal for the farmers to get a certified organic license—so just make sure you purchase seasonal items and ask questions--seasonal items are always cheaper, even when organic. Big tip: When shopping for meat, fish, or milk, make sure it is hormone free.
What are your other plans for the future?
I would love to collaborate with someone like Rachael Ray and her Yummo organization to bring more awareness about the childhood obesity. I actually think Rachael and I have similar personalities. Nutrition counseling is what I do, and I am very passionate about it. Be sure and check out my website.
OK, final question: What is your all-time favorite food?
Oh wow, that is a tough one! I like everything. But I would have to say BACON! I mean, who does not like bacon? In moderation of course….
