For a city its size, Lexington has a surprising number of options when it comes to purchasing books. The most well known options in most cities, Borders/Waldenbooks or Barnes & Noble, are only a minor presence here. Joseph-Beth is the place to buy new books, not only because of its central location and good selection, but also because it is a strong independent bookseller. Its Children/Young Adult section, located in the lower portion of the store, is one of the best reasons to visit Joseph-Beth; it is extensive, with knowledgeable and friendly staff who have great recommendations. Joseph-Beth also has frequent events, from book signings to crafts, musical events to movie nights.

For used books, a popular option is the more recently opened store Half Price Books, located in the Hamburg area. What makes this a great store is the fact that there are books for readers of all ages and with all preferences. From sci-fi/fantasy, to mystery, to romance novels, there's something for everyone. The non-fiction areas are as extensive as those at any store that sells new books, with options that range from dated material, up through current books. Half Price Books also has Dvds, comic books, and music in several formats. And... a Summer Reading protram! Running through July 31st, kids 12 and under can earn a $3 Half Price Books Shopping Card for reading 15 minutes a day. Visit the store for details.

However, traditionalists and collectors still prefer smaller, more broken in shops like Black Swan Books or Glover’s Bookery. At these stores you get specialized collections (focusing on things such as Kentucky authors, Kentuckiana, Equestrian History, and History), out of print books, and first editions instead of popular fiction. There is also the added value of the hunt, finding books by a favorite author that you never knew existed or read when you were younger; looking through shelves and never knowing what will be the next book you find.
