Two of the most anticipated games of the year are being released today.  Let's hope the live up to the hype.

Brütal Legend – PS3, XBOX 360: Published by EA Games

Brütal Legend has not had an easy run of getting released but it’s finally here, and according to the preliminary reviews, players shouldn’t be disappointed. Take control of Eddie, a heavy metal roadie voiced by Jack Black. Eddie must save the world by battling his way through monsters, demons and Goths. Anyone with a subscription to Game Informer understands the basic concept of this game, as they’ve pimped it in nearly every issue this year. It’s part action, part RTS, and part vehicle based combat. And with the exception of Eddie not being able to jump (Seriously?) the game mechanics work fairly well. Brütal Legend looks to be a contender for game of the year whether enjoyed by Metal fans or regular gamers seeking a good time.

Dreamkiller – PC, XBOX 360: Published by Aspyr

Dreamkiller seems like the collaborative idea of a lot of stoners who got together one night to watch horror movies. After watching both A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and The Cell they concocted this ‘wicked’ idea for a video game. In Dreamkiller, players take on the role of Alice, a psychiatric dream warrior that faces the evil foes lurking in her patients dreams. While the concept seems derivative it may work for a few scares this Halloween.

Ju-on: The Grudge – Wii: Xseed Games

Ok, ok, this game almost reeks of suck right off the bat. It’s gimmicky, the concept has already had its day and there’s not a whole lot to actually do besides try not to jump. But the game is also priced at around thirty bucks and it’s a haunted house simulator released right before Halloween. Ju-on: The Grudge isn’t going to win any critical praise, but it may make your tough guy friend scream like a girl. That may be worth the price of admission.

MagnaCarta 2 – XBOX 360: Namco Bandai Games America

MagnaCarta 2 is a brand new concept rather than a sequel to the first installment, but the themes are basically the same: love, greed, politics, and finding one’s own path. Though the concept is kind of ‘been there done that’ there is still a decent amount of draw to the title. Voice work and graphics are pretty solid and though the control scheme may have its problems the game is still playable. A nice addition to the shelf for fans of the genre.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games – DS, Wii: Sega

With the Winter Olympics just around the corner, Sega has given fans the chance to brush up on their skills with Mario, Sonic and all of their pals. Though the graphics for this game certainly don’t shine, the concept is pretty solid: grab a couple of friends and face the snowy terrain in hopes of scoring the gold medal. Add a couple of brews to that if you’re old enough to make the experience all the more interesting.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky – DS: Published by Nintendo

Ah Pokemon; a concept that has managed to snare hardcore fans of both adult and child age groups alike. There must be something to love about it. Maybe it’s the great gameplay, maybe it’s the collectability of each creature, and maybe it’s just cute. Either way, Explorers of the Sky is probably going to do the same thing all the other Pokemon games have done: sell quickly to fans and be completely ignored by those who still have remained immune to its charm.

Tropico 3 – PC, XBOX 360: Klypso

Ever wanted to be a dictator? Now it's possible with way better graphics than there were in the first Tropico title. Fashion a dictator to look and ally themselves in a variety of different ways, then let him lose upon his hardworking citizens. The cold war setting helps to add intrigue to the gameplay and the top down view works to as a reminder as to whom is really on top.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – PS3: Published by SCEA

Uncharted has been hailed as one of the best games on the PS3. Uncharted 2 may be even better than the first title. Reviews are already lauding it with outstanding reviews and talking about possible Game of the Year awards. Households without a PS3 handy are definitely missing out on one of the year’s best with this one.

Way of the Samurai 3 – PS3, XBOX 360: Published by UFO Interactive

The Way of the Samurai games certainly haven’t been perfect. The concept is a bit off, the controls aren’t the best and the graphics and voice acting are pretty standard. Fans of the series may take a chance on this title, and fans of Samurai lifestyles may pick it up.

Where the Wild Things Are – DS, PS3, XBOX 360, Wii: Published by Warner Bros.

It’s another licensed movie product. It seems redundant to explain what that means for a game at this point.
