Apple's crowning achievement, the iPhone, is blowing up internationally...literally. The iPhone is reportedly shattering in a few isolated incidents. The most notable claim comes from France, in which a french teenager was holding the device in his hand when it began to make a hissing sound. Shortly thereafter the screen shattered and a piece of glass went into his i.
...Sorry...eye. Couldn't resist.
Apple is looking into these claims and trying to determine the cause of the break (there ought to be an app for that sort of thing), but they claim that these are isolated incidents and not a general problem.
It's not the first time the iPhone has had some technical difficulties, and it's not the first time Apple products have gotten people hurt. Earlier this year, reports were circulating that the iPhone was overheating to the point of discoloration.
It could be the type of battery the iPhone uses. Newer extended-life batteries can be more volitile, and a surge caused a chip to explode (something similar happened to me in an electronics lab last semester. Unlike the teen though, I was wearing safety goggles at the time.). It could also just be extreme overheating (again, most likely from the battery), causing a battery leak in the phone that broke the screen directly or raised the temperature, causing the break, but overheating in these cases has not yet been reported.
There's no word on what specific generation iPhone this was, but this examiner believes it's the iPhone 3GS, since the same phone has been having the overheating issues.
My advice for prevention is simple. Pre-break your iPhone's screen so that it can't shatter all at once. (Note: While I am not liable for any damages ensuing from you trying this, if you send me a video of it, I will put it up here.)
Tony Bownes is an Electrical Engineering Major at Christian Brothers University who believes that Apple is creating Skynet and that French kid was onto something when Apple found out and acted. Well played, Jobs. Well played.
