One thing DC has a shortage of is good bagels. A transient city, DC is home to many, especially former Northeasterners (New Jersey and New York), and they just want a doughy, delicious bagel or bialy (even more rare in this city).
Yes, we’ve got Firehook (a little too fancy for bagels) and Dunkin Donuts (utilized in a pinch, only). The good news is that a tiny, cramped spot called Bagels Etc. on P Street in Dupont not only offers New York-style bagels, but also bialys! YES!
Cramped and always busy, Bagels Etc. sells over 20 different kinds of bagels from egg, to blueberry, to sesame and poppy, and is reasonably priced. There are many breakfast specials to choose from, too. From a bagel with coffee and orange juice, to breakfast sandwiches and even pancakes, there is something for everyone. Service is quick and if you can find seating outside, nab it quickly as indoor seating is very limited.
Another great thing about Bagels Etc. is that it uses whipped cream cheese on its bagels (very New Jersey). The bagels, oh so reminiscent of the Jewish bagel shops along the eastern seaboard, are perfectly doughy, yet not too chewy. Squeezable, tear-able, delectable.
Stop by Bagels Etc. and see what you’ve been missing all these years.
