The Mandarin Oriental Hotel

With few good places to grab a bite to eat in L’Enfant Plaza, hotel dining is a surprisingly satisfying alternative if you’ve got the few extra bucks to spend.

The L’Enfant Plaza Hotel’s “American Grill” offers up an array of soups, sandwiches and pasta dishes, but only a few are unique enough to stand out among a selection of “standards.”

The crab cake sandwich is fried to perfection and served on a toasted roll with caper aioli on the side. Use a dollop of aioli to give the sandwich a flavor kick. Coleslaw and wafer potato chips accompany it. What’s special about this sandwich is that it actually tastes like crab and not breading (often incorporated to lessen the percentage of crabmeat).

For a lighter choice, the Mediterranean avocado wrap (vegetarian) is the way to go. Caramelized onions, roasted red peppers and chunks of avocado are stuffed into a hummus-filled tomato tortilla. The sweet flavors and varying textures of the vegetables create a delightful experience for the taste buds. The only downfall: the wrap is cut into thirds so the middle section is hard to eat without using a fork (the insides fall out at both ends creating quite mess).

Other standout items are the soups and desserts. The tomato soup is unique as it incorporates a snap pea pesto, an interesting flavor combination sure to please. The creamy blue crab soup is a balanced dish of crabmeat and Swiss cheese and is served with crostinis (perfect for dipping).

If you’ve got room left for dessert, the crème brule and chocolate mousse cake are decadent choices and will satisfy your sweet tooth.

For Asian-inspired cuisine, head a few blocks east and try the sophisticated Café MoZu inside the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The bright and airy dining room offers views of the Washington Channel and Tidal Basin, and thoughtful décor creates a refined setting for a business lunch.

Café MoZu’s menu is simple and offers dishes exploding with flavor. The restaurant’s sushi selection includes unique rolls, such as the Harmony Lobster Roll and Cherry Blossom Roll. The Harmony Lobster Roll includes generous portions of not only lobster, but also avocado, a combination leaving the lobster the center of attention.

The combination of spicy tuna, tempura flakes and beet rice makes the Cherry Blossom Roll an interesting selection. The spicy tuna tastes fresh and isn’t too spicy, pairing well with the beet rice and crunchy tempura flakes.

In addition to sushi, the café also offers a small selection of salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes, along with a slightly more detailed menu of entrees. Entrees range from braised pork belly with sweet potato puree to black cod with baby spinach to Australian Kobe-style strip loin with Yukon golden potatoes and shitake mushrooms. There is also a curry buffet Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. offering regional curries from Thailand, Malaysia and India.

Don’t skip dessert as MoZu offers delicious choices such as cappuccino crème brule, served in a tea cup with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and fresh fruit sorbets.

Keep in mind Café MoZu is more expensive than the American Grill, but with the price comes a more upscale and sophisticated dining experience.

Hotel dining may not be an every day option, but to add a little oomph to your lunch break, check out what L’Enfant area hotels have to offer.
