Mooooooove over ice cream and allow gelato to makes its entrance! Pitango Gelato moved into town less than one month ago and has already made a big impression on its customers.

Located across from Whole Foods, Pitango’s storefront is a wall of windows allowing passerbys to get a glimpse of the busy gelato bar and the long line of patrons waiting for a taste of creamy deliciousness.

If you’re unfamiliar with gelato, it is a creamier version of ice cream and contains less milk fat. By legal U.S. definition, ice cream must contain a minimum of 10% milk fat while gelato contains between 5-8%. Don’t be fooled with the lower milk fat content, as gelato is also churned differently than ice cream which adds to its distinct creamy texture and consistency. What is special about Pitango is that it only uses fresh and organic ingredients. No chemicals or extra coloring allowed.

Customers can be as creative as they’d like, mixing flavors to optimize their gelato experience. Creating a Neapolitan is a tasty choice and won’t disappoint even the most finicky palate. The Local Strawberry doesn’t have one hint of artificial anything – just a fresh, creamy, strawberry taste. Despite its name, the Bourbon Vanilla only has a hint of bourbon flavor and could possibly use a bit more. Ohhhhh and the Chocolate Hazelnut is the gelato version of a Ferrero Roche. It’s a dream come true for chocolate lovers and according to Noah Dan, CEO, the chocolate flavors, especially the Chocolate Noir, are the best sellers.

A scoop of the Vanilla Chocolate Chip pleases the palate, but the chocolate chips (more like slivers) are a bit of a disappointment as the vanilla flavor overpowers most of the chocolate. Nonetheless, it is very satisfying.

Dan admits that the company’s gelato costs a bit more than traditional ice cream, but he knows his customers will appreciate the product. “With almost blatant disregards for cost of ingredients, our product may cost an extra buck, have no real shelf life, and will never look like the radiant green pistachio, but its flavor and texture will communicate its real value,” he says.

Put down the Ben & Jerry’s and back away from the freezer. It’s time for Pitango.
