"America's Next Sports Star" is a six-week series that will air every Tuesday night at 6 on Versus.

Jersey Express forward Jamie "Showtime" Sowers is known for his electrifying talent on the court. Now the 6-8 forward from Newark will get to show the world his talent on one of Versus' upcoming sports reality shows. "America's Next Sports Star" will make its primetime debut on Nov. 24 at 6.

“A friend called and gave me the heads-up about the show, so I headed out to Hoopland in Brooklyn for the casting call,” Sowers reflected.  “[The scouts] ran an NBA-type combine that focused on the basic skill set that it takes to play at the professional level."

Scouts, according to Sowers, took a hard look on his basketball knowledge and athletic abilities. Sowers during the combine was tested for his skill level and overall talent. By the end of the combine, he managed to make it through the casting and through the finals.

In addition to a preliminary round of 200 hopefuls, "America's Next Sports Star" also held open tryouts in Newark and Miami. Judges evaluated the players' skills during the tryouts based on passing, shooting, slam dunking, and ball handling. Four players including Sowers were selected from each city to move onto the actual show.

“This whole process really fueled my drive and hunger, and it will let me know what I need to do to take my game to the next level,” Sowers said. “Hopefully, this can give me the look that I couldn’t get before. It will definitely remind me that I have the talent and IQ to play at the highest pro level.”

The reality show is hosted by former NBA player and three-point shooting champion Craig Hodges. Hodges played 10 seasons in the NBA, winning two NBA titles in the early 1990's with the Chicago Bulls

The winner of "America's Next Sports Star" will be announced on the final episode, airing on Jan. 5, 2010. The grand prize will feature a paid trip to Las Vegas and a contract with a top sports agency.

For Sowers, this will be his advantage to show his talents to the greater Newark area fans at the Nov. 21 home opener prior to the show's debut. The Express will play division rival New York City Thunder at East Orange Campus High School.
