The Notorious B.I.G is arguably one of the best rappers to ever grace the microphone, and today March 9 marks the 12-year anniversary of his tragic still-unsolved murder.
This year's biopic 'Notorious' hit the box office giving audiences a glimpse at his ability to move mountains in his personal and professional life as a product of his Bed-Stuy Brooklyn beginnings.
His influence is only compared to that of another fallen Hip-Hop icon 2Pac, the late Christopher Wallace laid the foundation for the '90s East Coast lyricist and beyond.
The truth about his influence is more than just heads rocking when the intro to "Juicy" or "One More Chance" blares through the radio. His impact is more than just rappers like Jay-Z, Nas, Fat Joe and Jadakiss scrambling for the microphone crowned King of New York title.
His legacy is forever engraved as a testament to a rapper's ability. Do they possess Biggie's wordplay and storytelling imagery that produced magic every time he spit bars? Do they have Biggie's same grasp of a powerful delivery that made every track his own? Are they able to go hard even amidst the most commercial sonic aura? Are they able to ooze a charisma of more than just an MC but a trailblazer? Who else had us rocking Coogi Sweaters?
Regardless of today's wack ringtone rappers and one hit wonders, the reality is that no one may ever reach the bar Biggie set for himself, the East Coast or Hip Hop in general.
Check out some of these tracks by the late Frank White that celebrate what he was to Hip Hop. We'll always love Big Poppa!
