Sipura Spa-200 Phone adapter
Voice over IP with an analog phone

Voice over IP has great advantages over land line phone systems for the consumer in this volitile economy. Adding voice over IP with your existing analog phone is even better. Voice over IP offers telephone service at a fixed price for nationwide calls. Over the years it has been plagued with staic and poor quality sound. The cost reduction for consumers was an advantage for those who call out of state. Regular calls to relatives outside the calling area on a land line (wireline) phone can make the monthly bill skyrocket.

Voice over IP phone systems require a specialized phone to connect ot the service. Old wireline phones were not compatible with the new equipment.

There is an alternative to consumer VOIP systems that uses your existing wireline equipment and comes in a very economical price range. The company I found for this is CordiaIP. The system works with a telephone adapter that connects to your network equipment and wireline phone. All of the translation goes through the adapter. See the diagram at the top of the article.

The service is paid for by the month at very reasonable rates (under $20 for nationwide). The company offers International and Toll Free plans as well. The toll free service is not like wireline toll free. It is not billed by the calling party location. It is seemless to both parties and under $25 per month.

The real advantage with this is its portability. For the business person that travels, this system can be connected to the LAN in a hotel and then to an analog phone. Once done, your line rings where you are. Your customers and friends can reach you no matter where you are. You can make calls for your business while out of town as if you were home. Save those hotel fees.
