Great podcasts about Missouri and college football in general

Because, once in a while, college football coverage is better ingested through listening:

  • The tremendous job by the guys at The Columbia Daily Tribune of following the Missouri Tigers is highlighted by their weekly podcast, which features the musings of Tribune sports editor Joe Walljasper and the paper’s football beat writer, Dave Matter, whom I have given great accolades to in the past for his work.

Walljasper and Matter review the defense’s performance and the contributions of true freshmen, including blue-chip recruit Blaine Gabbert, against Colorado, legitimize the rumors swirling out of Seattle that involve head coach Gary Pinkel and make predictions on this weekend’s Big 12 matchups.

  • Slightly less professional yet equally as trustworthy are the guys from Mizzourah. Though their podcast schedule is a bit erratic compared to the Tribune’s weekly installment, this crew delivers insight that is every bit as entertaining and timely as you’ll find anywhere. This week, Big Head, the site’s featured writer (I think), and True Son, a current MU student (from what I can gather), sum up last week’s blowout, in particular the Coffman Leap, and the overall mood at Faurot Field on Homecoming. Moving ahead, other topics include a forecast for the remainder of the Missouri schedule, the latest AP and USA Today polls and this Saturday’s contest against Baylor.
  • A small side note: Mizzourah makes regular appearances on the podcast for College Football Weekly. A week ago, Big Head made one of his frequent appearances to discuss the state of the then downtrodden Tigers and display his potent ability to see into the college football future.
  • Speaking of the future, make sure to check out the Waco Tribune-Herald in coming days to get in on their podcast, which is sure to include plenty of talk about the Bears’ opponent this weekend.
For a more national flavor:
  • Visit The College Football Guys, who blanket the landscape by shrewdly dispersing themselves to the corners of the country. Utilizing personnel in the South, North and West, The Guys tackle the pertinent issues with the aid of a ‘sixer’--six questions, six topics, six answers, six opinions--and they do so with grace. Besides the obvious reviews and previews, TCFG breaks down the fickle nature of the ACC and Big East, speculates whether the SEC was tripped up last weekend and ponders which teams are best equipped to take down Alabama or Penn State.
  • The Worldwide Leader has unsurpassed podcast coverage, but, then again, they should. The ESPNU College Football Podcast features a plethora of studio hosts, esteemed columnists and bloggers, and even the all-knowing Beano Cook, the revered 77-year-old college football historian who never fails to remind us what Notre Dame’s road record was in 1938. After listening to the Oct. 28 edition, which weighs BCS scenarios, return the next day, when Cook will join host ESPN.com senior writer Ivan Maisel as he does each and every Wednesday during the college football season.
In a bit of shameless self-promotion, I recommend you visit Serious Sports News Network and The National Sports Review for a look at my past work.
