One Foot Off the Ground Promo

Daming Chen, talented actor, producer and film director is re-making the hit Mel Gibson film What Women Want for the Chinese market. He is collaborating with Paramount Pictures to direct the Chinese version of the American made blockbuster, which will translate the concept more effectively to the Asian audience.

That is not all Daming is up to. He recently wrote and directed two films, Manhole and One Foot Off the Ground.  Chris Barden sends in a glowing Variety review of Manhole, a new Mainland film written and directed by the actor/writer/director.

Critics called Daming’s film, Manhole “a beautifully structured script, in which the characters ripen and all the elements click together” and “a fine standard bearer for quality Chinese commercial cinema”.

Manhole, an urban black comedy romance caper was strangely absent from the West’s festivals where it should have been shown as it has potential for success in America due to the universal content. The story is complex, told between present-day scenes and flashbacks giving it a “put the pieces together” stylistic element. One critic goes on to explain “The way in which the characters individually grow gives the picture a sense of assurance that percolates down to the performances.” This appears to be quite an accomplishment for the then first time feature director, 39 year old Chen.

Daming went on to write and direct “One Foot on the Ground”, on which he collaborated with the esteemed Hollywood executive, Chris Lee who also founded the Academy for Creative Media at the University of Hawaii. This film is described as “A tightly scripted comedy about losing your footing and regaining your balance, this film follows the trials and tribulations of a struggling Chinese opera troupe.” Chris Lee’s recent credit is as Executive Producer of Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie and Superman Returns. It looks like Daming Chen makes smart choices in his film projects and he surrounds himself with strong Hollywood heavyweights to cement his success for the future.

Daming Chen has always been ambitious and driven. He graduated from the Beijing Film Academy (BFA) for acting in 1988 and took an assistant professorship for another two years at the same school. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Los Angeles, California and worked as a successful actor for over ten years. He transitioned to writer-director with his 35 mm film Manhole, which was an official selection of the San Franciso International Film Festival, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Hawaii International Film Festival and the Udine Far East Film Festival gathering great buzz along the way.  http://digitalcontentproducer.com/mil/features/china_next_generation/
Chen’s second film One Foot on the Ground achieved critics’ praise as well as commercial success, which is not an easy task. One Foot has received several awards around the world, including Best Director at the 9th Brasilia International Film Festival and earned nominations from San Sebastian International Film Festival and Chinese national film awards, The Golden Rooster Awards.

With Daming’s tenaciousness, smart choices and talent, both as a writer and behind the camera, he is bound for future success and will be “the one to watch” as he moves up the ladder in the film world.
