The Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (INAO) is a branch of the French Ministry of Agriculture. The INAO was created in 1935 to manage French wine-processing.

France developed the term Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) in 1937. The United States followd this model with their American Viticultural Areas or AVA's.

The term Appellation d'origine controlee translates to "controlled term of origin." AOC's certify that certain French agricultural products (like wine, cheese and butter) are produced and unique to a specific geographical location.

AOC's vary in size and in the products made in each region.
