The Niagara wine region is located between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario in Western New York State, USA and Southtern Ontario, Canada. It is about an hour and a half drive from Toronto or Rochester and about half an hour from Buffalo.
The Niagara wine region is one of only a few major wine growing regions in Canada. In the United States, New York is third in grape production after California and Washington State. Included in the Niagara wine region is the Niagara Escarpment American Viticultural Area. This AVA includes the portion of the Niagara Escarpment in the New York state portion of the region.
This region includes Niagara Wine Trail which offers lodging along with wineries.
There is a wide range of wines produced in this region; from Riesling to Cabernet Sauvignon, from fruit wine to icewine.
Icewine is a type of dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. This results in a more concentrated and very sweet grape juice since sugars do not freeze. It is a risky and labor intensive process. The Niagara Peninsula has become the world's largest Icewine producer.
A journey on the Niagara Wine Trail will allow wine lovers to experience many different types of wine amidst the gorgeous scenery of the Niagara Falls, upstate New York and rural Canada.
