Shiraz, also known as Syrah, is a dark-skinned grape used to produce red varietal wines. It is known as Syrah in France, its country of origin, as well as in the rest of Europe, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. It is known as Shiraz in Australia where it is the most grown dark-skinned grape variety. It is known as Shiraz and Syrah in the United States.
Wines made from Shiraz often have a very powerful flavor and are full-bodied. It is best known for its spicy blackberry, plum and peppery flavors. The climate in which the grape is grown affects the flavors. Warmer temperatures bring out Shiraz's mellower flavors like plum; cooler temperatures spice up the wine. Shiraz can also be made in a fruity, sweeter style or in a dry style.
Many Shiraz wines are best when aged for up to five years. There are some exceptions that can be aged for 15 years or longer.
Shiraz pairs well with beef, lamb, duck and goose because it tends to compliment their heavier flavors.
Shiraz should be served from a large glass at 64 degrees farenheit.
