Malbec is a black (deep red) grape used to make both red wine varietals as well as blended wines. The grape originated in France but is now considered the premier grape of Argentina. After a frost that killed off 75 percent of the crop in France, Malbec has become less popular there.
This thin-skinned grape requires more sun and heat than Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot to mature. Malbec wines often have flavors of cherry, plum, raspberry and chocolate. It is notorious for its deep inky color.
Wines yielded from Malbec grapes are full-bodied and pair well with roast meats like turkey or chicken and steak or mushroom based dishes.
Malbec wines have recently gained popularity in the United States. It is mostly used in blended wines but is gaining recognition as a great varietal red wine.
