In my last article I spoke on the importance of balance in your posture. Being a chiropractor, posture is something that I speak a lot about. But to talk about balance and only speak on maintaining your upright position, would really do a disservice to the term. And since part of being a chiropractor is being a "wellness adviser," now would be a good time to talk about some of the other imbalances.
As I mentioned in my New Years resolution article, maintaining a balance in your personal and professional time is imperative for a healthy psyche. From my own personal experience, when I was first out of school and practicing for the first time, I was devoting extreme amounts of time to work, and very little to myself. What happened to me happens to most that do this, they experience burn out rather rapidly. There are ways to work 80-90 hours in a week and still find a balance with personal time. It takes effort, and planning. As was mentioned in a previous article, you must schedule your time almost to the minute to make the most of it, especially if you are working long hours. This creates efficiency in your world and you don't find yourself sitting on the couch at the end of the day saying, "How is it 11 o'clock already?!?"
The other very important balance in your life that must be maintained is your diet. This issue is one that is being pushed more and more as the collective waistline of America continues to grow. We are a culture of convenience, and it is difficult to get good healthy meals all the time, but if we can plan our days more efficiently, we can certainly eat better.
Sometimes however it is not that we choose not to eat a balanced diet, but rather we just don't know what a balanced diet is. Having a balanced diet consists of eating foods from the basic food groups that give you enough calories to fuel your body for the day. And it isn't just as simple as eating some apples and broccoli everyday. You need to get a variety of different fruits and vegetables throughout the week to give your body the different nutrients that it requires. Your body requires protein and carbohydrates each and every day. Again this can seem a bit stressful to attempt to try to eat correctly, but with a little effort and more importantly planning it can be achieved.
