Isn't this what we are all looking for?

This month Examiner.com will be featuring the Diet Debate.  This is our chance as health care providers and consumers to speak out on what we feel is the best diet.

First, let me start off by saying that the word diet conjures up for most a short term sacrifice.  If you truly want to lose weight, you need to make a lifestyle change, change your food intake, and exercise pretty much for good.  So to be fair, if all you want to do is lose a few pounds for the reunion or to fit into that dress, then crash diets work.  However; if you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to make a lifestyle change and eat right for good.  If you simply stick with it, as they say, then you will lose weight and keep it off.  It doesn't matter what diet you use, they all work.  The problem is people start them, they get to their target weight, or worse, they plateau and stop losing weight and they quit eating right and go back to their old habits.  This is why everyone says, "oh that diet doesn't work."  They all work, if they didn't, they wouldn't be able to sell all of their books and food and whatever else.

Now that I have that off my chest, my personal favorite in the diet category is Bill Phillip's Body For Life.  It is a fantastic book that gives you a lot of information.  It is not only a diet, but also an exercise plan.  I will summarize it as best I can for you.  Basically what he suggests is that you eat small meals 5 to 6 times a day.  This keeps your metabolism working and burning calories throughout the day.  Each meal should be balanced with protein and carbohydrates and a little bit of fats.  Along with the eating of more frequent meals is exercising 6 times a week.  This sounds like a big commitment and it is, but I have never seen a diet work as efficiently as this.  It takes a willingness to undertake the Body For Life, but it is well worth it.

As I mentioned, there are thousands of diets out there and most of them really do work, you just have to stick with them.  In my opinion however, this is the one you should strive for.  Pick up the book and take a look at it.  He does an excellent job relating the material and giving you an idea of why you should eat the way he suggests.  As always please leave a comment and let me know what you think.
