This truly has been an amazing year.  The world has seen things never seen before, found things thought impossible, and done things that were impossible.  Yes, 2008 has been pretty amazing so lets take a look back at the year with a little help from the Pennsylvania Health Examiner.

The year has seen turmoil in the economy and in politics.  We have seen amazing achievements in sports such as Michael Phelps winning EIGHT gold medals, and Tiger Woods winning the US Open on basically one leg.  There have been horrible tragedies around the world such as the bombings in India and the floods in Haiti, but to quote from Newsweek: "no matter what is going on in the world, medicine still pushes forward."  There have been amazing advancements, discoveries, and achievements over the last twelve months.

Most people only hear about medical research whenever it is cutting edge (and featured on 20/20 or Dateline.)  We hear about breakthroughs months, sometimes years after they actually happen.  The information is all out there, the national news only wheels it out on slow news days typically.  Let me just fill you in on a few small accomplishments that have been made in 2008.

A study performed this year links Alzheimer's and diabetes

Internal surgeries are being performed without the use of any incisions

Epsom salts can lower the risk of cerebal palsy.

Children in day care tend to develop obesity due to unstructured eating habits.

Research in the Netherlands has found a possible blood test to predict menopause

Global warming can lead to an increase in both allergies and kidney stones

This is just a tiny sample of research that was released this year.  I know that many of us are thinking that 2008 is a year that should be forgotten due to the outrageous inflation and crashing in the stock market.  However; these breakthroughs, and many like them, are helping us live longer healthier lives.

Thank you to everyone that has read my articles so far this year.  I appreciate all of your feedback and wonderful questions and look forward to helping you next year meet your health goals.  Whether your goal is to lose 10 pounds or to get back in shape, or to get rid of those nagging headaches.  Whatever your goals are, we can reach them together.  Merry Christmas, and a very Happy New Year.
