Some of you remember the heroes of yesteryear. They fought in World War II, Vietnam, the Gulf War and the wars that came before and after. They served their country bravely and unselfishly. They risked their future so that we could live out our future. They are fathers, brothers, children, uncles, cousins and yes, actors. Some of these men served before their names were ever known.

Today is Veteran’s Day and as a salute to those who served and are still serving, here’s a look back at the stars that got their start in the military. For all of the women in arms, don’t feel left out because your part has not been mentioned in the following paragraphs. Your contribution has not been forgotten and it is greatly appreciated. Happy Veterans Day to all and thank you for all that you have done for our country.

 

    AP- Alan Alda

Alan Alda - Long before Alan Alda enlisted in M*A*S*H, he enlisted in the Army Reserve. He served as a gunnery officer in the Korean War.

Clark Gable - Film legend, Clark Gable's, military story is tragic. He joined the Air Force after his wife, Carole Lombard, was killed in a plane crash. She was returning from War bond selling trip.

 

   AP- Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby - Cliff Huxtable, aka Bill Cosby, trained as a hospital corpsman in the Marines. He was later sent to Bethesda Naval Hospital to work with Korean War casualties. 

Drew Carey -  Host, Drew Carey, joined the Marines in 1980.  It's said that acquired his trademark crew cut and rimmed glasses there. Hoorah! 

Ed McMahon - The Star Search host was another famous Marine. Ed McMahon was a test pilot in World War II and flew 85 combat missions in the Korean War. He held the highest active military officer ranking for any actor in history.

 

   AP- Chuck Norris

Chuck Norris - Actor, Chuck Norris joined the Air Force after high school. While stationed in Korea, he learned a little skill that never used again, martial arts.

Jimmy Stewart - Lovable Jimmy Stewart was the first famous actor to enter the military. He enlisted in the Air Force during World War II. He retired as a Brigadier General.

 

   AP- Elvis Presley in the Army.

Elvis Presley - Before he was "king", Elvis Presley was a private. He was drafted into the Army in 1958 and later was stationed in Germany, where he met his future wife, Priscilla.

Montel Williams -Talk show host, Montel Williams, enlisted in the Marines after high school. He attended both the Naval Academy Prepatory School and the Naval Acamdemy at Annapolis. Williams became the first enlisted marine to complete and graduate from both schools.

Johnny Carson - Ed McMahon's partner in Comedy, Johnny Carson, enlisted in the Navy but never saw combat. Hiroshima was bombed while he was en route to the battlefield.

Clint Eastwood - Actor/Director, Clint Eastwood was drafted into Army during the Korean War. While on a trip home to visit his family, the Navy plane that he was in crashed and he had to swim a mile to safety.
