We’ve heard about the most recent political infidelity scandal,South Carolina’s Governor Mark Sanford. Sanford ran off to Argentina and did not let his office know where he was going to be. After about a week being MIA, he returned with the “startling” news of having an affair. Are we surprised?
Gov. Mark Sanford wasn’t the first, and surely isn’t the last of these scandals. We also remember very well of President Bill Clinton’s story as well. What is going on here that these politicians are cheating on their wives?
This could be a number of things. Either they have a poor sex life with their wife, or they married the wrong woman, or after the vigorous task of acting on all the political stuff, they wanted something more exciting than passing the latest budget or vetoing a bill. Or could it be that they just are being a man?
Who knows, but it’s not making men look very good, especially since now this is another hit to the Republican Party. What about the wives of these fine men?
First Lady Jenny Sanford has made statements this week.
"Mark showed a lack of judgment in his recent actions as governor. However, his far more egregious offenses were committed against God, the institutions of marriage and family, our boys and me. Mark has stated that his intent and determination is to save our marriage and to make amends to the people of South Carolina," Jenny Sanford said.
That is probably the best after-scandal speech ever heard. Should Sanford leave? Probably, since he’s probably lost the trust of many South Carolina people. Not only that, but at least Clinton stayed in his office. What is more important, the people you are governing or your mistress? What if there was a storm in Argentina and a crisis in South Carolina, and you weren’t there because you’re busy with a playmate and couldn’t make it back?
A word to the wise; we’ve all heard this one, but let’s say it again for people who aren’t commoners: A man cheats once; he’s going to do it again. Also, if he makes a fool of you once, he’ll make a fool of you twice. Amends should be made to repair the friendship part of the relationship. Jenny Sanford would probably get a bigger applause if she left him, kept a civil relationship with Mark, and made sure that the boys are raised to know better to find the right woman the first time around. Or if you’re not sure if you are with the right person, wait until you know.
Governor Mark Sanford screwed up, and should be forgiven at some point. But a woman standing by her man no matter what, well, that’s up for discussion. Standing by a man is good when he’s going through a rough time is one thing. Standing by your man even though he screwed up and seemingly at the time didn’t care about you or your kids means time to find a better man.
