If there is one thing I want to make clear, women’s issues are not just for women. If you think that, you’re not old enough to understand, or you live under a rock.

My last semester at Springfield College, I took a class called Women and Philosophy taught by Dr. Tom Digby.
That’s right, I said Tom Digby, a well-known feminist professor, or as another professor called him once, “Mr. Feminist”.
And some would assume he’s gay because he’s a feminist. He is not, however, because during his class he occasionally receives a phone call from his girlfriend, or he talks about her in some the issues we discussed in class.

He became a feminist after the failure of his first marriage. During the aftermath of the divorce, a colleague and feminist philosopher friend asked him to read one of her papers. The article she wrote brought him to a realization of why his first marriage had failed, and he started thinking critically on women’s issues. He later wrote a book in which he compiled stories from others called “Men Doing Feminism”.

I mention my professor because surprisingly enough, the class was equally divided, eight men and eight women students. I found that interesting because a class I had a few semesters prior to that, only one man was in my “Women and Literature” class. There is hope for men getting on board to women’s issues.

Women’s issues affect everyone. Men deal with women on a daily basis, whether they like it or not. It doesn’t matter if these men are gay, straight, or transgender. Women are your mom’s, sister(s), coworkers, friends, girlfriends, fiancé, wives, your doctor, lawyer, etc. Women’s issues are not just about studying women’s rights, it’s about how we function and cooperate in a “man’s world.”

When I talk about women’s issues, I don’t just talk to the women out there. I talk to girls, boys, young and old men as well. Understanding women’s issues is the key of both sexes living in a functional, healthy and happy way of life for all.
