Love to read? Share your passion with other book lovers by joining one of the book clubs hosted at the Parker Library.
By definition, reading is a solitary activity. For true book lovers, it can also be expensive. Book clubs offer the opportunity to discuss literary works of all kinds, and the Parker Library offers free books, of course, and free meeting space.
Ranging from contemporary works, to classics, to children’s books, interested readers can find the right book club in Parker.
For discussions of a variety of works with library staff and patrons, check out the Booksharers Club conveniently scheduled at lunchtime. Club members conduct open general discussions and welcome all interested persons.
For classics, readers may be interested in the Great Books Discussions book club. According to the Parker Library website, this type of book club began in Chicago “with the idea that ordinary people could meet and discuss the enduring ideas and issues found in classic writings”.
For more contemporary works including both fiction and non-fiction, the Inklings meet monthly to discuss a range of selections including Out Stealing Horses and How Far is it to the Ocean from Here.
The Novel Approach book club was the first one formed at the Parker Library, and reviews works by authors such as Oscar Wilde, Sarah Dunant, and Olive Ann Burns.
Readers with morning time available may be interested in the Twenty Mile Book Club, which meets at 9:30 a.m. monthly. Choices range from Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to A Mercy by Toni Morrison.
And finally, young people have two book club choices at the Parker Library: Mother and Daughter Book Club for girls 8-12 and their mothers, and Animal Tales for all children ages 9-14.
For more information on these book clubs such as days and times, please visit Parker Library’s website.
