Once you get the need for a double-double, there’s no turning back. If you’ve never tried one, you should know delicious facts. Founders Harry and Esther Snyder opened the original I-N-O in Arcadia, CA in 1948 and now there are over 200 locations in California, Nevada and Arizona. Some older locations feature just a drive-thru and the newer locations are full dine-in restaurants.

The menu listed is pretty simple. Regular burgers, cheese burgers, double-doubles (the most popular burger) and protein burgers, but regulars know there are some special “versions” missing from the main menu. For example:

Animal style - lettuce, tomato, extra spread, pickles, grilled onions and mustard fried on the bottom of the patty.

The 3x3 - includes three patties and three slices "of cheese.

The 4x4 - you guessed it, four patties with four slices of cheese.

The 5x5 ~now that's just crazy.

The Flying Dutchman – named after Snyder's Dutch son Guy’s fave, two meat patties with two slices of cheese on top, inverted and wrapped - that's it.

The Protein burger – the same as any other burger but wrapped in crisp fresh lettuce instead of a bun. Amazingly, this was one of the original burgers offered on their menu back in the early days.

More fun facts….

Where’s the beef? - It's in Baldwin Park. That's the location of the personal butchers hired exclusively for I-N-O. The beef is fresh, never frozen, has no fillers and delivered to each of the 200+ locations every two days. They use the best part of the cow –the front chuck cut - which exceeds USDA standards.

No flat buns! - That's because they have their own bakery, Puritan Bakery, that uses slow-rising sponge dough, granulated sugar (not liquid) and again, no preservatives. These buns are made fresh daily.

Who cut the cheese? - The In 'n Out peeps use a special made cheese that is more dense, and they slice their cheese thicker than any other food chain. Therefore, the cheese doesn't melt down into a drippy mess.

What’s in the secret sauce? - We will never know – it’s a secret. All I was told is that it’s mayonnaise-based with some chopped pickles.

Onions – grilled or raw? - You can get your burger done any way you, want with a choice of fresh veggies. Onions (grilled or raw) tomatoes and lettuce, and no preservatives or additives.

Fries with that? - This one surprised me. They peel and cut their own potatoes on-site. After slicing them up, they are deep-fried in pure cholesterol-free cottonseed oil.

Shake it up, baby! - There are only three flavors offered – vanilla, chocolate and strawberry and all made fresh to order from real whipped ice cream......mmmm....shakes!

The Burbank location is 761 N. First St. at the corner of SFR. Open till 1:00 a.m., Friday and Saturday till 1:30 a.m.
