Comic-Con International, the annual gathering of comic book, science fiction/fantasy and popular media aficionados, concluded yesterday evening in San Diego, California.
Costumed fans and their civilian clad counterparts began milling outside the San Diego Convention Center as early as last Wednesday for a preview night that included fighting a swell of wall-to-wall people, “Iron Man” freebies, photo opportunities with larger than life characters, and chances to rub elbows with “Heroes” cheerleaders.
Although not in short supply, geek chic styling appeared on the wane. Many faithful arrived in street clothing eager to mingle with the Hollywood glitterati. By all accounts, they got their money’s worth. The event quickly adopted the air of a Hollywood movie premiere, complete with red carpet and unfortunate hairstyles.

Tickets to the four-day convention sold out months in advance. Almost immediately upon door opening, Twi-hards jammed the “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” booth for souvenir giveaways. Many had camped overnight outside for a spot at Summit Entertainment's panel conference featuring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner. Those unlucky enough to arrive without press passes or guardian angels could only salivate outside the conference hall like mere mortals. Two sneak previews revealing topless male leads quickly became the talk of the more fortunate, however, all was not love fest and rainbows. At least one fan left the conference hall patently disappointed blaming brain-addled answers from celebrity panelists.
Not that a momentary lag could ruin the ambiance. In recent years, Comic-Con has become a “hyperspaced” launching pad for hotly anticipated movie and video games releases. Entertainment Weekly operated a luxury booth, interviewing the stars of “New Moon,” “Avatar,” “The Green Hornet,” “True Blood” and more. Plenty of Hollywood celebrity power rocked the Convention Center, promoting new projects or relishing the fantasy atmosphere.
