On June 26th, Vans Warped Tour 2009 kicked off another exciting summer of the largest traveling musical festival in North America. The convoy rolls into Columbia, Maryland this morning for its one-day only appearance at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
More than sixty bands will be on hand for a full day of entertainment, including crowd-pleasers 3OH!3, The Scenic, and underOATH. And for less than $25 a head, the price of admission is well worthwhile. In addition to enjoying live music from several sound stages, fans can browse merchant booths, visit the warped photo booth, and gather free information from non-profit organizations. They can also gain faster entry by donating certain canned food items to the festival.
I caught up with Rob Dyer of Skate 4 Cancer, a strictly volunteer organization seeking to eradicate cancer through prevention education. Dyer has an infectious smile and quiet determination despite being caught in a hotel parking lot with friends repacking suitcases. Dyer organizes his own annual music tour called the "Cure is Knowledge," and has traveled thousands of miles by skateboard to raise cancer prevention awareness. He is one tough cookie and a “must see” on this leg of the Vans Warped Tour.
