Robert Downey, Jr. speaks with Sam Rubin at Oscar Nominees luncheon

Next Sunday, February 22nd, the 81st Annual Academy Awards will take center stage at Hollywood’s legendary Kodak Theatre.

This past Monday, over 100 Oscar nominees wined and dined at the Beverly Hilton while President Sid Ganis warned them to “Expect the unexpected” at this year’s ceremony.

Actor Robert Downey, Jr., nominated for best supporting actor for his role as Kirk Lazarus in “Tropic Thunder,” seemed to be taking media-related aspects of the event in stride. Reelz Channel Sam Rubin caught Downey doing an impromptu Christian Bale during a pool interview, supposedly to demonstrate his character’s mood swings.

I think Downey likes to amuse himself at this type of event by seeing how far he can go with the media. In this case, Rubin totally caved.

Downey also amused those in attendance at the actor press junket with calculated humor and witty banter.

Noticeably absent from the exclusive gathering: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Meryl Streep. Brangelina hasn’t been doing very well at other award events, currently batting a big fat zero in the win column, although knocking ‘em dead on the red carpet.

For fashion mavens who can’t get enough of Oscar hype and hooplah, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is offering a special interactive feature. The “Oscar Designer Challenge” allows fans to choose which gown the Oscar trophy presenter will wear. Through February 17th, the public is invited to vote for their favorite gown online. The winner will be seen more times throughout the live telecast than any other gown at the ceremony.

If these luncheon arrivals are any indication, fashionistas have plenty to look forward to at this year. Nominees dressed in lovely tasteful designs and matching accessories, hinting I hope, at fabulous red carpet styles to come.
