The Brakes are a young up and coming Philadelphia band with lofty aspirations. The group bills their own sound as "infectious indie-pop circa Ram-era Paul McCartney, crunchy California rock in the spirit of The James Gang and starry-eyed British psychedelia that hark[ens] back to Traffic."
Hmmm. Is ithat along the lines of psychedelic peanut butter and banana crunchy granola rock reminiscent of Kool and the Gang?
About a year ago, 25-year old Brakes member Matt Kass uploaded this video as a homespun publicity stunt. Amusing and well-intentioned, yet not quite meme material, the video was a modest success. Kass deserves an A+ for effort, if for nothing else than capturing the exchange for prosperity.
About seven months later, it took the creative ingenuity of someone like this guy to spin Kass’ video, "Senile Cat," into a publicity goldmine. Ronald, aka quantum mechanic kuantummekanik, probably didn’t realize the video was Brakes PR. More likely, he didn’t care. Buried deep within the accompanying description, he at least had enough heart to credit Kass with the original. Otherwise, the story behind the sordid cattail tale of sex, foul language, and betrayal may never have come to light. And while we’re on the subject of generosity, it bears mentioning that without Ronald’s English subtitles, "Senile Cat" likely would have gone the way of other earnest missed-the-marks… straight to purgatory obscurity.
WARNING: This video contains crude language that might not be appropriate for young viewers. Proceed at your own risk and basic assumption that its hilarity quotient far outweighs any prurient sensibilities.
Then again, do any of these ridiculous cat videos exist for reasons other than to grab our attention? At least "This Cat Betrayed His Girlfriend" reverberates for reasons other than mindless blather, although I’ll have to admit, a good belly laugh at any time of the day or night sure does a body wonders.
On November 5th, The Brakes will play The Night Cat in Easton, Maryland. The irony of the nightclub’s moniker didn't escape me is hardly worth mentioning.
